AN INITIATIVE to help smaller companies from the Sheffield area to win city council contracts has been praised by regional chairman of the Federation of Small Businesses, Tony Cherry.
Speaking after the first 'Buy Local' summit, hosted by City Council Leader, Coun Paul Scriven, Mr Cherry said: "This is a very good starting point.

"It was a great opportunity to talk to people and to find out more information for our members, so
that they are better able to win public sector contracts."

Coun Scriven, who unveiled plans for the initiative after the Liberal Democrats took control of the council, said: "Buying local is the right thing to do for the people of Sheffield.

"The council should actively be supporting local businesses and local people, both to boost the local economy and to reduce our carbon footprint, so I'm delighted the changes we're bringing about are striking such a chord with the business community in Sheffield."

The summit will be repeated in six months to review progress.
